Attack of the Clones… With the drying up of any interesting Mega builds, I have been diving head first into the pool of cheap clone sets. Aside from having to carefully read the product descriptions and examine the often doctored product images to avoid “micro block” sets, I am much more often than not…thoroughly impressed. The building techniques and designs are imaginative, the piece quality is right up there with Mega and Lego, the instructions are clear, there are almost never missing pieces, and for that matter, there are rarely extra pieces. You can slam them for being knockoffs and ignoring copyright laws, but they seem to have found a way to exactly and only provide the pieces needed…something that continues to elude Mega and Lego. Mattel should sell Mega to one of these offshore outfits…even if they only did non-copyright sets like plants, animals, architecture, dinosaurs, historical and military builds and only sold them online, I would be first in line.

Nice stuff! I'm fighting the urge to dive in on other brands, in part because a local hobby store has a good supply of Cobi sets and would be happy to take my money.
