I've waited far too long to sort my embarrassingly large heap of bloks, so I'm soliciting advice.
At the most basic level I sort between "old" and "new" Mega, an admittedly arbitrary distinction with the intent of keeping the older plastic elements from the newer. The elements can be distinguished by sound, because the older stuff has a higher pitch "rattle," along with a different glossiness in the colors.
Beyond that I sort by color, but that can become problematic thanks to Mega's huge palette, which can result in small numbers of bloks in a dizzying array of colors.
From there, if the numbers justify it, I break the color down into different types of element, bricks/plates/tiles/brackets etc. Sometimes that doesn't work out--I don't have enough "gold" elements, for instance, so they're all in one box. Also, there's a million shades of green and of yellow and of gray, so you can easily fall down the rabbit hole.
So how do you do it?

A mix of sterilite tubs and plastic drawers, divided mostly by color and to a lesser extent, function. A few of the more numerous colors have multiple tubs, roughly divided by size. The function drawers are things like rods and tubes, clear parts, grid plates, wheels, weapons, plus one tub of nothing but small irregular parts of any color...works for me.

I need a room that big!!! I should probably get the dividers and drawers first though...
I am kinda going with the way you do it Hegemon. I do have a use for the older blocks I have though... I am gonna try my hand at acetone'ing it and making molded pieces.

In the wake of this discussion, and the realization that I've got to start somewhere(!), I'm going to go with the "sort by color" option first. I've been spinning my wheels trying to find a more efficient method, but I think this'll be the way to go.
Granted, there'll still be many variations of the basic colors to deal with, but I guess I'd have to deal with them anyway, so I might as well get to it. Once the primary sorting is done, I can worry about this green and that green, etc.
And then I guess I'll sort by part type (or at least by part category).

That is how half my loose stuff is somewhat sorted. I just have no proper drawers or compartments for them, they are all in ziplocs and pill pouches.
