On the whole I'd say that our group doesn't show a lot of interest in Mega's Barbie product line, though I must admit that I picked up more than a few of those sets (on discount), and some of the accessories are pretty cool. I'm not particularly invested in the overall Barbie universe, however.
But with the live action film set to debut in July, you'd think that a certain toy company might consider capitalizing on that property, no? This would be a great time to abandon those dreadful stubby "Barbie" abominations and re-relaunch the blok tie-in with figures that at least vaguely approximate the iconic doll.
Any rumblings from Mattel about a forthcoming product line? I've done some light Googling but haven't seen anything. And why the hell not? Lego was releasing sets for The Batman MONTHS before the film premiered. And they had a ton of sets to tie into The Lego Movie & sequel. But Mega/Mattel? Crickets.
There's no downside here. They don't have to pay licensing. They have a vast array of theme-fitting bricks already in the catalog. They have a product with a proven track record dating back 60+ years and beloved worldwide. Even if they only market sets based on existing mainstream Barbie stuff, they'd have decades of material to work with.
In her day Barbie has been a doctor, an explorer, a businesswoman, an athlete, an astronaut, and much more. A quick glance at the figurines now offered @ Dollar Tree shows her in two dozen different variations. But what did Mega come up with? An oft-vacationing pet vet who sometimes sells ice cream and maybe runs a salon or bakery.
Come on, Mega/Mattel! There's more to the tier-two brick market than a swarm of redundant Pokemon sets. Quit being your own worst enemy and act like you want your brand to succeed!
