So I've had it in mind for a while to build some ruins, specifically buildings with battle damage. I've watched a ton of vids on YouTube about modelling war dioramas, and they've been helpful but not exactly matched to the constraints and possibilities of brick-based destruction. Here's a very rudimentary first swing at the style. No real detail on the "structure," and no interior, ruined or otherwise. Just a test of a concept to see what I like and don't like.

Your destruction looks good. Kinda like the Hulk broke out from inside the walls.
My own problem with trying to model destruction like this is how to make it represent not just the damage to the structure but making explosion or fire damage look realistic at the same time.

That's been troubling me as well. In addition to my YouTube "research," I've kept an eye out for decrepit and/or semi-destroyed buildings in my daily travels for work. Thankfully/sadly western PA has a lot of such structures.
One point of difficulty for me is that in these real-world buildings, the damage often but not always follows the lines of the bricks or cinderblocks, while sometimes individual bricks are broken. I'm trying to learn how to represent these differences convincingly, since I'm too stuck on the regular "staircase" pattern of ascending bricks. I need to come up with a method for convincingly randomized damage, so that's what I'm trying to work on.

What about using triangle/wedge type pieces attached to square pieces that have side posts? Just a thought.

I've had some success rotating bricks out of alignment with the wall on a single stud, like they were pushed out by a blast. You may need to leave an empty space next to them to allow this rotation, but that can also add to the damaged look.
