Since I was never really part of it in the past, was there a time when there was a lot of build/create you own type stuff?
Or has it always mostly been just getting and building sets?
From what I have seen on reddit and facebook that seems to be the majority of it. Get, Build, Display. This may be due to a monopolizing of Halo. I wanted to get some info before I assumed. I could always just be missing some facts and the percentage that actually do create are just that much smaller. I never was too good at socializing in any type of circle, except maybe IT stuff.

In recent years the MEGA fanbase mostly seems to be about collecting, rather than MOC-ing. I could be wrong, but the online MEGA community really didn't have much traction prior to Halo. Fans of the brand had to make do with Lego forums, where we (or our brand, at least) weren't always welcome. Still, LUGNET has always hosted an off-topic.clones group, and in years past a few people offered up cool MOCs. One that really jumps out for me was the Port Block Yards, by Richard Parsons. I haven't interacted with Richard in many, many years, but much of his page is still viewable on Wayback. His MOCs often combine brands, with quite impressive results: web.archive.org/web/20020420181231/http://www.ozbricks.com/portblock/yar/welcome.htmI've been doing the MEGA MOC thing for quite a while, but I've seldom done anything very large or spectacular. But I believe that I can say with some confidence that our members here create some of the finest MEGA originals to be found anywhere! I got into Mega just as the first Halo Wars sets were coming out, and started custom building from the get-go. Back then there seemed to be more people doing custom builds and more interest in custom builds in general. At that time, however, Mega was focused on putting out building sets that included figures. Mega now seems to be more focused on putting out lots of figures that from time-to-time include a building set. As that focus shifted, it seems that the community shifted along with it, putting far more effort into customizing figures, and giving far more attention to custom figures over custom builds.
