Over the Christmas/New Year holidays, I built a number of Cobi tanks. The first one I built was the M4 Sherman (Set# 3007A). Upon completing it, I noticed that it was running bigger, width-wise, than 1/35 scale. Length-wise and height-wise it seemed close enough. Then I received a Brickmania M4 Sherman (BKM2184) for Christmas. Brickmania supposedly scales their kits nearly exact to 1/35 scale. Upon comparing the Brickmania Sherman to the Cobi Sherman, the Cobi definitely ran slightly wider.
So, I wondered if it was possible to slim-down the Cobi. I was hesitant to breakdown the Cobi but I thought it would be an interesting exercise. So, I took the plunge and broke it completely apart. Started from the beginning, except this time 2 studs narrower. And while I was at it, I would convert it to a "large hatch M4A3". (Those who know their Sherman tank minutia would know what I mean. ).
I finished my project last night. Here it is next to the Brickmania Sherman.
The Cobi is now slimmer with a new front hull and new turret. Details on the butt and topside are different. I also swapped the Cobi treads for Brickmania treads.
There are still some things I need to work on though. Specifically, the rear half isn't sloping downward enough. I messed something up somewhere and I need to fix it.
