Mega, a quality brand with terrific designs and strong licensed properties, has struggled during its whole existence, sometimes on the verge of utter collapse.
On the other hand, Playmobil somehow keeps trundling on for decades. How the hell does it pull it off?
This is anecdotal, I know, but in my childhood I never had a friend who had any Playmobil, I never saw it at any stores other than Toys R Us or specialty toy boutiques and niche markets, and its hugely expensive. I've seen only a handful of Playmobil commercials in my life, and to the best of my recollection have never seen it at any yard sale or thrift store.
How does that brand persist despite its seemingly deliberate effort to fail, while Mega can't seem to catch on, despite being 100% compatible with the industry giant?
Baffling.

I don't think playmobil is stigmatized/hated as much as mega in those early years, so there's not the same level of what I guess can be called hatred towards the brand. Their target audience is also younger, and from what I've seen most of their products can be just counted as toddler toys.

Playmobil is a very strong brand in Europe! In European toy stores, the department for Playmobil is just as big as the one for Lego! I grew up with Playmobil and have been collecting it for a long time! In contrast, mega blocks was not to be found in Europe at all! It is just a brand that was to be found in the past mainly in the Nafta States! As the range gets smaller and smaller, I do not really see any chance that Mega will become a strong brand again. In addition, the competition between Mega & Lego ist much stronger than with Playmobil. Because Playmobil tends to target children who prefer role-playing rather than building.

Would you believe me if I told you LEGO considers Playmobil their biggest competition?

Would you believe me if I told you LEGO considers Playmobil their biggest competition? As a matter of fact, I would! Check out THIS POST on LUGNET in which I told of my embarrassing encounter with a LEGO rep. I was incredulous at the time, but in light of your comment here, it finally makes sense (just 16 years later)!
