My local store had an almost full stock of these new "Build Your Own Fidgets" polybags, so I picked up four of them.
If you haven't seen them, they're little "robot" sets on a 4x4 plate with a few bits of gearing and other moving parts. 30 or 31 parts depending on the set and no figures. The finished build is roughly cubic, with the "fidget" parts on the front, sides and top.
This particular set has black, gray, yellow and white elements, while the other sets have different combinations.
What they are:
They're cute little builds with nice colors and surprisingly good brick quality. AFAICT the gears are basically indistinguishable from their Lego equivalents, and I have to suspect that that's the point. The set goes together easily, and the "fidget" elements give simple but fun playability. They also have two 1x1 round tile elements with a black "iris" to make the bot's eyes.
What they're not:
From the look of them, I kind of thought that there'd be some kind of gear interaction within the box shape so that different elements would engage together. Maybe turning the gear on the side would make the tusk(?) elements on the face flip up and down? Alas, no. With the exception of the paired gears on the left side, each fidget is isolated. Basically, the fidgets give individual "play" elements but don't have much to do with each other.
I suppose an integrated gear box was too much to hope from a $1.25 set, but for some reason that's how I saw it in the pic.
Still, worth the price for the elements and plastic quality, and they're kind of cute even if you have to go the "trouble" of manually moving the different bits!
