Have checked out a couple ebay auctions over the last few weeks and some of the shipping quotes are RIDICULOUS! I think they are using some ebay calculator, and don't know how to use it correctly. One I just looked at had shipping of @$75 to travel 4 states, for something about the size of the old Dragons tins and not terribly heavy. When I asked if there was a way to ship it cheaper, they said they didn't know how to help. Oh, well, the bright side is, it's only toys.

I haven't bought anything through ebay in over a decade, but I seem to recall that at one point the site charged fees to the seller based on the price of the item, so they'd sell the item at an oddly low price but make a fortune on the shipping and "handling." Not sure if my memory is correct in this regard; I know of at least one site where it applies, but I don't know if ebay did it, too.
The other, related reason for this, I think, is that it lets the seller list a hot item for an attention-grabbing low price, like:
"Mega Construx Castle Grayskull, by it now for $9.99" and then they charge $500 for shipping. An inattentive buyer might commit to the purchase without realizing how much they'll wind up paying.

Those type of buyers scare me... to think they could be in charge of my child at a daycare...
