LOL. I'll check later to see when Mega debuted that part. Mega also beat LEGO to the punch on the 8 x 8 plate, a point I made on LUGNET way back in the day, light-heartedly mocking the "canonical" brand for "cloning the clone."
Huw Millington, the author of that article, is a good guy and a heavy hitter in the AFOL community for many years.

For the record, it seems that Mega introduced the Plate 1 x 5 way back in 2007, appearing first in set 3230 Mountain Peak Expedition. It has appeared in dozens upon dozens of sets since then.

I feel that LEGO although traditional is somewhat "too" locked into its tradition. But not being a brick aficionado my opinions only carry so much weight.

I was looking at older posts and just read your line about "brick aficionado" and my brain immediately pictured some guy in a tuxedo with a wine glass full of bricks swirling some in his mouth and spitting them out and saying something like "it's a lovely little 1x1 red brick with a nice LEGOy bouquet, a 1977 vintage LEGO if I recall correctly."
