The first set that I inventoried specifically for this little endeavor was the CNG04 Spider Tank, posted on July 18, 2015 on The Bloks Forum's previous incarnation.
The process was actually begun some time before that, however, with the catalog of unofficial Mega Construx elements rendered for the use with the LDraw family of utilities; this process created a listfile of elements, matching part number to part description, from which the current inventory takes much of its material. In addition, kitbasher, then a member of the original Bloks Forum, had already compiled a list of "official" colors used by Mega, and these also appear in the current undertaking.
Prior to July 2015 there was a scattering of inventories available online, on LUGNET and on a few privately maintained webpages, but these were scarce and adhered to no standard format.
Unfortunately, Mega Construx, like Mega Bloks and Ritvik before it, does not seem to maintain a master list with official names of parts or colors. At least, such a list has never to my knowledge been made public. Even if such a list exists, early sets didn't provide parts inventories at all, and colors showed considerable variance among different examples of the same set. As such, our efforts here will remain an unofficial "best guess" for these reasons. To my knowledge, this information exists nowhere else online, and possibly nowhere else at all.
The primary goal of this project is threefold:
1. To provide a tally of as many sets as possible, since Mega Construx apparently doesn't keep information in this format
2. To help collectors to identify parts that they may be missing from otherwise complete sets, especially older sets
3. To offer this resource simply for the curious
The other chief goal is to maintain a tool through which one might determine where a given part in a given color can be found. Although this feature is not available online, the database that formats the inventory postings also allows me to search for parts in an ever-growing master list of over 900 sets. That way, if someone is looking for a particular element in a certain color, I can tell them which sets include it, and in what quantity.
Like much collector-related documentation, this is primarily a labor of love, and I find it satisfying to look back on the history and evolution of my favorite brand. Absent major input from Mega Construx itself, it is likely that the database will never be "complete," because new sets are released all the time, while rare or forgotten older sets still turn up from time to time.
In the mean time, please bear with me as I chip away at the mountain of sets waiting to be catalogued. There are, by my count, well over 3000 official sets to be inventoried, so I'm not yet even a third of the way there!
Thanks for your interest.
